Human Resource Management (China)

Good human resource (HR) management is a key criteria for tea producers supplying ETP members. The Chinese labour market has seen rapid changes in recent years, and we know from experience that tea producers have varying degrees of standards and systems in place. Without the appropriate systems and management practices in place, workers’s rights can be infringed.

How we helped

We coordinated a training programme using an experienced Chinese HR consultant to help ensure that producers meet national and international social and labour standards. At the start of the project the HR consultant interviewed different levels of factory management to identify common areas of risk. This information was used to develop course materials and an HR toolkit. The course covers:

  • Working hours
  • Contractual issues
  • Hiring, grievance, and disciplinary procedures
  • Wages, holiday, and benefits

The Toolkit

As part of the project, a toolkit with practical guides and contractual templates was produced. These help Chinese producers readily embed systematic record keeping and other good practices.
