‘Future in a Cup’ Helping Improve Tea Sustainability, Sri Lanka

In Colombo yesterday the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP), CARE Sri Lanka, and World University Services of Canada (WUSC)  jointly hosted ‘Future in a Cup’, a forum to discuss issues affecting the tea industry in Sri Lanka. ‘Future in a Cup’ welcomed key players from the Sri Lankan tea industry including Plantation Companies, Tea Estate Managers, and Trade Unionists as well as staff from key International Non-Government Organisations.

ETP’s Dushy Perera (Regional Manager for ETP Sri Lanka) and Amanda Penn (Programme Manager) represented ETP at the forum, which was a follow on from last year’s ‘An Industry in Transition’ workshop. The event was an opportunity to review changes that have taken place in the Sri Lankan tea industry over the past year. It also provided a platform to discuss key outcomes from a recent study tour of Kenya  by Sri Lanka tea professionals as organised by ETP and funded by WUSC. Ultimately the forum will lead to new strategies that help improve the sustainability of the Sri Lankan tea sector, the lives of plantation workers, and the environment in which tea is produced.
